Choosing The Right Domain Name
The Domain name or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is your trademark
on the Internet. It is your unique identity in the world of cyberspace.
Therefore, choosing the right domain name should not only be a
mere formality but a strategic exercise on your part for extracting
maximum benefit from your website address. Here are some tips that’ll
guide you towards choosing just the right domain name for your
website:
- If your website is targeted towards national or local marketplace,
it makes sense to have the cctld (Country-Code Top Level Domain)
as the extension of your domain name, i.e. www.xyz.com.au instead
of www.xyz.com. This kind of domain name will immediately lets
the visitors know the target traffic and the location of corresponding
office of the website. However, don’t go for cctld if you
are managing an MNC. At best, you can register similar cctld
and redirect the users to the main site with .com extension.
- Always prefer short domain name instead of a bigger one, as
the shorter ones are easier to remember. The operating principle
is KISS (Keep It Short and Simple).
- The domain name should be relevant to your business. For instance,
if Fred Motors is selling cars, no point in having www.fredbikes.com.au
as the domain name. Instead, it should be www.fredmotors.com.au
or www.fredcars.com.au or www.fredmotorcars.com.au.
- Don’t forget to include keywords in the domain name.
Search engines just love keywords in the domain name itself,
and accord highest priority to the domain name with keywords.
Though having company name in the domain name seems the obvious
choice, but if the domain is not available, it could be a blessing
in disguise, as you can easily choose a combination of keywords
for your domain name.
- Avoid hyphens in the domain name as far as possible. However,
if the non-hyphenated preferred domain name is not available
and the hyphenated one is available, don’t’ hesitate
in buying the hyphenated one, as the Search Engines are not allergic
to hyphenated domain names.
